Roat died in Orange County, California, on Aug. 5, his family confirmed to Variety and Deadline. A cause of death was not given.
Roat made his TV debut in 1962 with an appearance on the sitcom “Car 54, Where Are You?”. He quickly moved up to series regular status, landing the role of Dr. Jerry Chandler on the romantic drama “The Doctors,” which he starred on from 1963-1964.
Roat kept up a steady stream of acting gigs – and showed off his range – throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, appearing on shows like the family comedy “Happy Days,” soap opera “Dallas” and action crime series “Charlie’s Angels,” as well as “Hill Street Blues,” “Dynasty” and “Baywatch.”

He had recurring roles on the long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” playing Conrad Hutton in 1985 and Professor Henry Moore in 1991.
But the sitcom world proved to be a prolific arena for Roat.
In the ‘90s, he scored guest roles on “Mad About You,” “The Nanny,” “Murphy Brown,” “Living Single” and “Seinfeld.”At the turn of the millennium, Roat appeared on an episode of the Emmy-winning sitcom “Friends.”
Roat’s last television role was a guest appearance on the crime drama “24” in 2009.
The actor was also no stranger to the theater, performing on Broadway, at The Public Theatre in Central Park, The Huntington Hartford Theatre in Los Angeles and the Pasadena Playhouse, according to a Los Angeles Times obituary. He also worked as an entertainment tax preparer for over 50 years.
Roat is survived by his wife Kathy. The couple recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
“His greatest love was his family, with whom he shared his incredible sense of humor, intelligence, and unmatched zest for life,” Roat’s obit read.
